The cast of Sweeney Todd (Photo: Rory Dickerson)
Despite being an avid fan of musicals, I had failed to watch the recent film adaptation of Sweeney Todd prior to attending GMTG’s take on it. However this was probably to my advantage as I wasn’t expecting a Johnny Depp lookalike to appear on stage and was held in suspense as the plot unraveled. Sweeney Todd tells the story of a Barber sent away by a cruel judge many years ago, returning to London a somewhat darker and more sombre being. He teams up with Mrs Lovett to make pies of a less than usual nature!
All members of the cast delivered to a very high standard vocally, the actor’s actors who took the principal roles all shone, however Alex Purvis stood out significantly in her comical portrayal of Mrs Lovett.
The most striking aspect of the show had to be the fantastic set, the trapdoor under the Barber’s chair being the highlight, despite looking very painful for the actors who fell through!
Overall, the performance was well choreographed, designed, directed and performed, a must see for everyone, so do your best to get a ticket for one of the final performances and ‘Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd!’
